The case for universal, single-payer health care
Our health care system is a luxury — few people can afford to get the care they need.
• 86.7 million people, or about one in three Americans under the age of 65, were without health insurance at some point in 2007 and 2008.• 50% of all bankruptcies are partially the result of health care expenses.
• 68% of people who go bankrupt due to health care expenses had insurance when they declared bankruptcy.
We need a massive overhaul of our health care system. But Congress isn’t talking about that. Instead of simply providing health care for everyone at government expense, which is the way it’s done in Canada, France, the UK, Japan, and many other countries, they’re talking about doing things like taxing the substandard health insurance we already have to help pay for the rising cost of care. Let’s talk about what universal health care would look like and how to get Congress to stop talking about band-aid reforms for a broken system that should be thrown out and replaced.
