What Would a Sustainable Society Look Like?

A talk and discussion with CHRIS WILLIAMS, author of several articles on the environment.

What is meant by a "sustainable society"? This term, or some variant of it - sustainable development, sustainable agriculture, a sustainable economy - is bandied about all over the place. Everyone wants to be "sustainable" and create a "sustainable environment" or live sustainably. But what does "sustainable" really mean? Can capitalism be "sustainable"? What is the Marxist attitude to sustainability and would a socialist society be "sustainable"? If so, what would a sustainable socialist society look like?

These are the questions that we hope will be answered over the course of this talk and through the discussion.
Come with your own questions, thoughts etc - and the bringing of drinks and snacks strongly encouraged!

Suggested Articles:

The first installation of Chris Williams' two-part series in the International Socialist Review (ISR) magazine is more about the current global crisis. The second half (in ISR 64 but not yet available online) is more relevant to the question of how Marxism views nature. To get a copy of ISR 64, contact: deepa_k276@yahoo.com.

Suggested Books:

John Bellamy Foster's new book (actually a collection of recent articles) is very good: The Ecological Revolution - Making Peace with the Planet is particularly useful for explaining why capitalism is inherently anti-ecological and why genuine socialists, beginning with Marx and Engels, have always taken a strong interest in environmental questions. His previous books, Vulnerable Planet and Marx's Materialism are also very good for background.
